National Day of Mourning

In Canada on April 28, the National Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy.

I want to thank Cameco Corporation for inviting me to be their keynote speaker; to share & connect with so many in person at Cigar Lake and virtually to the other camps.

Such an amazing experience to be able to fly north and spend time at the mining camp.

So many people leave their homes and spend time away from their families and communities to provide for their lives…and in these camps there is community ~ a brother and sisterhood.

Having the opportunity to stay in camp, experience the lodging, food, and underground environment provided another level of education and appreciation.

I am beyond grateful for the hospitality and warm welcome I received.

To have the time for conversations and connections knowing an impact was made makes my heart full and further fuels my flame to pursue my passion.

I was #19 tag ~ there is a board for when going underground and every person is designated a number in case of an emergency and once back on surface safely the tag is removed…there is vast significance and importance in this process.

When I arrived back on surface and removed my tag it choked me up as it was a stark reminder not everyone personally removes their own tag.

On my flight home I had a gentleman in the seat behind me tapped me on the shoulder and thanked me for sharing the day before - he has been flying north to mine from his hometown of Buffalo Narrows for the past 33 years to provide for his family “once a miner - always a miner,” he loves his job & the goal is to get home safely.

I have many thank you’s for creating this opportunity Rise Air Athabasca Catering Limited Partnership and so many individuals who took the time to connect, welcome, educate, and share.

Sue Bachner Kirk Lamont Trevor Gonzales Dave Holaday Daley McIntyre Shannon Scott just to name a few.
